眾所周知，交通信號燈（traffic lights/ traffic signals）有「紅燈停，綠燈行（The green light allows traffic to proceed. The red signal prohibits any traffic from proceeding.）」之說。

「開綠燈」指交通路口打開準許行人車輛通過的信號（give the go-ahead signal，give the green light），後多用於比喻「允許某事（allow someone to do something or something to happen）」，或「提供方便條件（make easier for）」。

例句：

官僚主義總是為腐敗大開綠燈。 Bureaucracy always gives the green light to corruption.

我們永遠不會給賭博開綠燈。 We'll never give the green light to gambling.
