　　In1978,Ibecameaflightattendantforamajorairline.EarningmywingswastheculminationofachildhooddreamthatIhadsetformyselfaftermyfirstplanerideattheageoffive.Likesomanyothersbeforeme,Ifellinlovewiththeromanceofairplanes,adventureandhelpingothers.

　　Ihaveflownhundredsofflightssincegraduation,butonestandsoutamongthemany.

　　WewereflyingfromLosAngelestoWashington,D.C,whenIansweredalavatorycalllightinthecoachcabin.ThereIfoundayoungmotherstrugglingwithherinfant.Everythingwasamess,tosaytheleast,andthemother,whowasnearhysterics,toldmeshehadnomorediapersorotherclothingonboardtheaircraft.

　　Throughhertears,sheinformedmethattheyhadmissedtheirflightthepreviousnightinLosAngelesandbecauseshehadverylittlemoney,sheandhersonhadspentthenightontheairportfloor.Sinceshehadn『texpectedtomisstheflight,shewasforcedtouseupmostofhersuppliesandwhatevermoneyshehadtofeedthem.

　　WiththesaddesteyesIhaveeverseenshecontinued.ShetoldmeshewasonherwaytoNewHampshiretodeliverhersontothefamilythatwasadoptinghim.Shecouldnolongersupportthetwoofthem.

　　Asshestoodinfrontofme,crying,holdingherbeautifulson,Icouldseethedespairandhopelessnessonherface.And,asamotherofthreebeautifuldaughters,Icouldfeelherpain.

　　Iimmediatelyrangtheflightattendantcallbuttonandaskedforassistancefromtheotherflightattendants.Theybroughtclothtowelsfromfirstclasstoassistincleaningupbothmomandtheinfant.Iranandgotmysuitcase;becausethiswomanandIwereaboutthesamesize,IgaveherasweaterandapairofpantsIhadbroughtformylayover.ThenIaskedseveralfamiliesiftheycouldspareextradiapers,formulaandclothesforthechild.Aftertheyoungmotherandhersonhadchangedtheirclothesandthebabyhadgonetosleep,Isatwithher,holdingherhand,tryingtoprovidesomesupportandcomfortfortheremainderoftheflight.

　　Oncewelanded,Iwalkedthemtotheirnextflight,whichwouldtakethemtotheirfinaldestination;separation.Ibriefedthegateagentandthenewflightattendantcrewonthesituationandaskedthemtogiveherspecialattention.

　　WithtearsinmyeyesIgaveherahugandtoldher,"Youhaveshownmethetruemeaningofcourageandamother『slove.Iwillneverforgetyou."

　　AsshethankedmeforallIhaddoneshesaidsoftly,"You『renottheflightattendant,you『reaskyangel."Touchingmyflightattendantwings,shecontinued,"Andthoseareyourangelwings."

　　Withthosewordssheturnedandwalkeddownthejetway,herchildinherarms,andboardedtheplaneforNewHampshire.

　　ThoughIamnolongeraflightattendant,my"angelwings"arestillonprominentdisplayinmyoffice.AndeachtimeIseethem,Iamremindedofthatyoungwoman,herinfantsonandthegiftthatshegavemeonthatspecialday-thatwetrulyareallspiritualbeingstravelinginhumanform.
