Whyshouldpeoplecare?Becauseweneedanimals,andbecauseoncetheyaregone,therewillneverbeanymore.Animalsaremorethanjustbeautifulorinteresting.Theyaremorethanjustasourceoffood.Everyanimalhasitsplaceinthebalanceofnature.Destroyingonekindofanimalcancreatemanyproblems.Forexample,whenfarmerskilledlargenumbersofhawks,thefarmers'storesofcornandgrainweredestroyedbyratsandmice.Why?Becausehawkseatratsandmice,withnohawkstokeepdowntheirnumbers,theratsandmicemultipliedquickly.

動物是自然資源，在整個歷史過程中，人類一直在糟蹋著這種資源。人們殺死動物，獲得它們的皮毛，把它們當作食物或運動方式，或者只是因為它們礙事。成千上萬種動物已經從這個地球上永遠地消失了。現在另外上百種動物也上了瀕危動物名單。僅莢國大概就有170種被認為處於危險當中。
為什麼人們應該感到擔憂呢?因為我們需要動物，因為它們一旦消失，就永遠不會再出現。動物不僅僅是漂亮或有趣。它們不僅僅是人類的食物來源。在維持自然平衡中，每種動物都有其作用。毀滅某種動物會導致許多問題。比如，農民們如果殺死為數眾多的鷹，他們穀物和糧食的倉庫就會受到老鼠和田鼠的破壞。為什麼?因為鷹吃鼠類，沒有鷹控制它們的數量，鼠類就會迅速繁殖。
幸運的是，有些人正在努力幫助拯救這些動物。有些組織籌錢以便人們了解這一問題。他們也努力使政府通過保護瀕危動物的法律。很多國家已經通過了法律。這些法律禁止殺害瀕危名單上的動植物。某些瀕危動物的數目正在慢慢地不斷上升。
