"newspaper," c. 1600, from French gazette (16c.), from Italian gazzetta, Venetian dialectal gazeta "newspaper," also the name of a small copper coin, literally "little magpie," from gazza;
16世紀時,義大利威尼斯市政府首次發行了一份官方報刊,每月出版一次。當時用一枚叫做gazeta的威尼斯小銅幣(見下圖)即可購買一份這種報刊,因此將其稱為gazzetta。

該詞進入法語後寫作gazette。法國發行的第一份報紙就叫做Gazette de France《法國報》。後來,英語也吸取了該詞,並保留其法語拼寫方式,用來表示「公報」、「時事報」。許多早期的官方報刊都使用gazette這種名稱,現在依然主要應用於報刊名稱中。
