　　Amanlivingabsolutelyaloneinadesertorforestisfreefromotherpeople;butheisnotabsolutelyfree。Hisfreedomislimitedinseveralways。Firstly，bythethingsaroundhim，suchaswildanimalsorcliffstoosteeptoclimb。Secondly，byhisownneeds：hemusthavesleep，water，foodandshelterfromextremeheatorcold。Lastly，byhisownnatureasaman：diseasemayattackhim，anddeathwillcertainlycometohimsoonerorlater。

　　Whenmenlivetogether，ontheotherhand，protectionagainstwildanimalsiseasierandtheycanworktogethertogetfoodandbuildshelters;buteachmanhastogiveupsomeofhisfreedomsothathecanlivehappilywiththeothers。

　　Whenmenbecomeorganizedintoverylargegroups，andcivilizationdevelops，itispossibletogetfreedomfromhunger，thirst，cold，heatandmanydiseases，sothateachpersoncanliveahappierlifethanhecouldifhewerelivingalone;butsuchasocietycannotworksuccessfullyunlessthefreedomofeachhumanbeingistosomeextentlimitedsothatheiskeptfromhurtingothers。Iamnotfreetokillothers，nortostealsomeoneelse'sproperty，nortobehaveinawaythatoffendsagainstthemoralsenseofthesocietyinwhichIlive。Ihavetolimitmyownfreedommyselfsothatotherswillnotlimitittoomuch：Iagreetorespecttherightsofothers，andinreturntheyagreetorespectmine。

　　Theadvantagesofsuchanagreementaregreat：onemancanbecomeadoctor，knowingthatotherswillgrowfood，makeclothesandbuildahouseforhim，inreturnfortheworkhedoestokeepthemhealthy。Ifeachmanhadtogrowhisownfood，makehisownclothes，buildhisownhouseandlearntobehisowndoctor，hewouldfinditimpossibletodoanyoneofthesejobsreallywell。Byworkingtogether，wemakeitpossibleforsocietytoprovideusallwithfood，clothes，shelterandmedicalcare，whileleavingeach
