　　「國慶」一詞，本指國家喜慶之事，最早見於西晉。西晉的文學家陸機在《五等諸侯論》一文中就曾有「國慶獨饗其利，主憂莫與其害」的記載、我國封建時代、國家喜慶的大事，莫大過於帝王的登基、誕辰（清朝稱皇帝的生日為萬歲節）等。因而我國古代把皇帝即位、誕辰稱為「國慶」。今天稱國家建立的紀念日為國慶節。1949年9月的政協第一屆一次會議上決定把10月1日定為國慶節。在1949年10月1日宣告中華人民共和國成立，這是中國歷史上一個最偉大的轉變。1949年10月1日下午3時，北京30萬人在天安門廣場隆重舉行典禮，慶祝中華人民共和國中央人民政府成立。毛爺爺主席莊嚴地宣告中華人民共和國、中央人民政府成立，並親自升起了第一面五星紅旗。毛主席宣讀了《中華人民共和國中央人民政府公告》：「中華人民共和國中央人民政府為代表

　　中華人民共和國全國人民唯一合法政府。凡願遵守平等、互利及互相尊重領土主權等項原則的任何外國政府，本政府均願與之建立外交關係。」隨即舉行閱兵式和群眾遊行。朱德總司令檢閱了海陸空軍，並宣布《中國人民解放軍總部命令》，命令中國人民解放軍迅速肅清敵對黨一切殘餘武裝，解放一切尚未解放的國土。

　　每年國慶，各國都要舉行不同形式的慶祝活動，以加強本國人民的愛國意識，增強國家的凝聚力。各國之間也都要相互表示祝賀。逢五逢十的國慶，有的還要擴大慶祝。為慶祝國慶，各國政府通常要舉行一次國慶招待會，由國家元首、政府首腦或外交部長出面主持，邀請駐在當地的各國使節和其他重要外賓參加。
