　　Admittedlythevicepresidentsreasoninglinkingemployeebenefitswithcompanyprofitsseemsreasonableonitsface.Companiesthatarenotprofitableareill-advisedtotakeonadditionalcostssuchasincreasedemployeebenefits.However,thefactthatNostrumsprofitslastyearwerelowerthantheprecedingyeardoesnotimplythatNostrumisexperiencingfinancialdifficultiesthatprecludeitfromincreasingemployeebenefitsatthistime.Perhapsthepreviousyearsprofitswereextremelylarge;whereaslastyearsprofits,albeitlower,weresufficienttofundanincreaseinthebenefitspackagewithoutthreateningthecompanysbottomline.
