此詩是我在2006年譯就，2020年2月1日首次在頭條發布英譯的唐代詩人白居易的《觀刈麥》，這兩首在內容表達上有相似性，所以把威廉·華茲華斯的The Solitary Reaper 一併發出讓讀者欣賞。

威廉·華茲華斯簡介：

威廉·華茲華斯（William Wordsworth，1770-1850）是19世紀英國消極浪漫主義代表作家之一。與其他兩位，柯勒律治（Samuel Taylor Coleridge）和騷塞（Robert Southey）組織過一個文學小集團，被稱為「湖畔詩人」(Lake Poets)。其代表作有《雀巢》(The Sparrow’s Nest)，《雲雀頌》(To a Skylark)，《蝴蝶頌》(To a Butterfly) 以及本書選的這兩首等。由於他對事物本質和清新大自然的描寫，在其詩作中主張詩歌語言生活化，回歸大自然，因此他又被稱為「崇尚自然主義者」（Worshipper of Nature）。

下面所選的第一首《孤獨的收割者》寫於1805年，以詩賦畫，描寫一位在農田獨自勞動的愛爾蘭少女的形象。這首詩作體現了作者在創作中的一種傾向，即用個體來表現普通人性。詩作想像豐富，把平凡的場景託寓於少女哀婉的歌聲之中，以小見大，為讀者造就了一位平凡而又美麗動人的少女形象。

Behold1 her, single in the field,

Yon2 solitary Highland Lass3!

Reaping and singing by herself;

Stop here, or gently pass!

Alone she cuts and binds the grain,

And sings a melancholy strain4;

O listen! For the vale profound

Is overflowing5 with the sound.

No nightingale did ever chaunt6

More welcome notes to weary bands

Of travelers in some shady haunt,

Among Arabian sands:

A voice so thrilling ne』er7 was heard

In spring-time from the cuckoo-bird,

獨自一人收且歌；

佇足抑或輕身過！

單獨割谷捆成把，

歌聲伴著憂傷散；

傾聽那邊深谷中，

盈盈飄來歌曲聲。

夜鶯不曾唱此曲，

迎接隊隊倦商旅。

旅人停息陰涼處，

正在中午沙漠地：

音之美妙未曾聞，

恰如春之杜鵑呤。

打破海洋之沉寂，

直通赫伯裡底斯。

何人能述他所唱？

隱隱其間有憂傷，

緣起遠昔不平事，

還是陳年之戰紀：

或為點點更凡事，

抑或今日事熟知？

即景生之愁傷痛，

已然有之或重奏？

少女所唱之主題，

抑抑揚揚無終極；

她在勞作且歌唱，

猶見持鐮彎腰樣；

我已靜心聆聽過；

時值我把山爬越，

音律在我心中存，

此後長時不曾聞。
