形容詞是我們英語使用中最常見的詞，對形容詞學習的重視會使我們的英語表達幾句翻譯跟地道、更準確。雖然bare 和empty都是形容詞，意思有些接近，但他們用法不同，而且有不同的搭配。

bare有三個常見的意思。第一個意思是「光禿的，赤裸的」，指人的時候，多指身體的某個部位沒有遮蓋東西。比如說，The engineers worked bare to the waist in the browning sun.那些工程師在火辣辣的太陽下赤膊勞動。

我們表達「赤手空拳」時就用bare hands。比如：to fight the enemy with bare hands赤手空拳與敵人肉搏。「赤腳，光腳」用bare feet。

如果表達「孩子們赤腳走在沙灘上」可以說The children walk on the beach in bare feet.而「光著頭」則用to have one's head bare。

bare的第二個意思是「空的」，指「沒有家具或僅有必須的家具，沒有裝飾的」。例如，The little room was almost bare of furniture.小屋裡幾乎沒有什麼家具。

當我們表示「光地板（未鋪地毯的）」時，可用bare floors。比如，He had ripped up the carpet, leaving only the bare boards.他用力扯去了地毯，只剩下裸露的地板。

bare的第三個意思是「勉勉強強的，緊緊的，少數微小的，最低限度的」。比如：He earns a bear living.他掙的錢只夠餬口。再比如： The family was short of even the bare necessities of life.那家人甚至沒有最起碼的生活所需。

再比如，He did the bare minimum of work but still passed the exam.他只花了最少的工夫，卻仍然通過了考試。a bare possibilities極少可能性。

形容詞empty也有三個常用的意思。第一個意思是「空的」，可以指房屋既未被佔用，無人居住，又無任何家具設備，也可以指車船等未裝載東西等等。比如說，There are three empty houses in our streets.我們街上有三個空房子。The empty boat drifted out to sea.空船向海上漂去。

再比如：Here are still a good few empty seats.還有好幾個空座位。常見短語有：empty nest 空巢，empty nest syndrome空巢綜合症。empty handed兩手空空；一無所獲的empty的第二個意思是「空洞的，空虛的，無實在意義的」。比如，Life seems all of a sudden，empty and meaningless.生活好像突然間空虛而無意義。
