A malefic planet can change its function relative to the lagna, in the same way that benefics can change their characteristics.Saturn is considered the greatest malefic but becomes the best planet for those with a Taurus or Libra lagna.In the same way Jupiter, which is considered the best benefic,functions as a malefic for Taurus and Libra rising. Mars, another malefic, is good for Cancer and Leo lagna. I'll go into this in more depth within each lagna section.

Action is the key word here. If your lagna is in Aries you will need to contribute to the world in a positive way. Mars will give you courage, strengthand determination.An Aries individualis usuallyaverage in height and well-built. Eager to take the initiative,new challenges are a must, and routine work will always bore you. Aries people are freedom-loving and the restrictions of Saturn are the greatest test. If your lagna is Aries, Mars will also rule the eighth house of longevity. If it is well-placed in the chart Mars will indicate a long life, though the responsibility would be your own. However a debilitated Mars could indicate muscle problems and blood disorders. Saturn, Mercury and Venus act negatively with this lagna. The Sun and jupiter are very positive although Jupiter can sometimes cause problems because it rules the twelfth house of loss as well as the auspicious ninth house. Venus is the maraka planet for Aries rising.

Venus rules the good things in life and Taurus being an earth sign, the good things have to be practical and earthy: food and sex! These people admire beauty and enjoy luxury. People with Taurus rising are usually physically attractive, with a thick neck and broad shoulders, although they have a tendency to put on weight. Venus also rules the sixth (difficult) house - guard against putting obstacles in your own way. Venus can also show itself here as relationships with partners from foreign countries.The Moon, Mars and jupiter also act negatively for people with Taurus rising. The good news however,is that the normally difficult Saturn functions at its best here and the Sun and Mercury are also good. Mars is the maraka planet for Taurus.Mercury can be too as the ruler of the second house, but as it also rules the benefic fifth house its maraka qualities are not emphasised.

People with Gemini rising are usually tall, slim and attractive, with large hands and feet; they have lovely eyes and sharp features. This sign is all about mental activity. Lagnas in Gemini have a dual personality and the ability to see the other point of view. However, they can sometimes be deceitful, even to the point of self-deception.Mercury also rules your fourth house, and when a benefic planet rules a cardinal house it becomes malefic, so Mercury can create problems in the first house (your self) as well as the fourth(mother, your intimate feelings). Similarly so with Jupiter, which rules the cardinal seventh and tenth houses. Mars' rulership of your sixth and eleventh houses gives it the capacity to create problems,as its purely physical energy doesn't work well with intellectual Mercury;and the Sun, ruling the negative third house, has an inherently adverse relationship with Mercury. Even Mercury's natural friends can create problems for the Gemini lagna.Saturn rules the auspicious ninth house and theinauspicious eighth house while Venus rules the positive fifth house but also the negative twelfth house.

In common with Virgo, Gemini does not havea planet that acts in a wholly positive way. This lagna suggests that major issues will have to be reconciled in the current life. The Moon and Jupiter are the maraka planets for Gemini rising.

People with lagna in Cancer are of medium height with a moon-shaped face. Like Taureans they have a tendency to put on weight. If you have Cancer rising you will need to be especially aware of the waxing and waning phases ofthe Moon as thesewill greatly affect you. Lagnas in Cancer are very moon-like-mysterious, changeable and secretive. Cancer is a water sign so you are likely to be very emotional.Water has the ability to boil as well as freeze.The Moon is the significator of the mother and you will always feel a great need to nurture others. You are able to adapt easily and will feel at home in any situation.

Venus is a benefic planet, but ruling the cardinal fourth house and the eleventh house, it is not positive.Mercury is also negative as it rules the third and the twelfth houses. The Moon is afraid of Saturn, the death-inflicting planet for Cancer,and those with lagna in Cancer have Saturn ruling their seventh and eighth houses. The Sun is not always positive.Mars is the Moon's great friend as it rules the auspicious fifth and the powerful tenth houses, and is raja yogakaraka - a planet that can make kings. Even if Mars is debilitated in the chart it still gives very good results. Jupiter is a benefic planet, only creating problems as ruler of the negative sixth house. The Sun and Saturn are themaraka planets for Cancer rising.

Leo is a royal sign and its symbol, the lion, is called the king of the jungle. People with Leo rising have a regal appearance with a broad face with strong bones.However, Leo men can have a receding hairline with a tendency towards baldness. If you have lagna in Leo you will be basically materialistic but like to be spiritually aware.You will be both an idealist and ambitious.You have the ability to take sudden action, and can become extremely involved in a project or romance, only to give it up with no warning. Lagnas in Leo tend to expect others to fit in with what they want.As Saturn, the Sun's enemy, rules the seventh house, relationships can be a diffcult area, with struggles for power and clashes of ambition. Leo Saturn,Mercury and Venus are negative planets for you: Saturn rules the sixth house as well as the seventh, Mercury rules the second and eleventh houses, and Venus the third and tenth. Jupiter can be a good planet but it can cause problem sthrough its rulership of the negative eighth house.The Moon is generally considered neutral for Leo rising, but depending on its overall strength in the chart, can sometimes bring emotional stressand mental suffering connected with loss. Mars isthe best planet for this lagna as it rules the fourth and ninth houses and is a raja yogakaraka - a king-making planet.It can give great success and happiness.

Mercury has a special quality for Leo rising: it rules the two houses of wealth - the second and eleventh. If Mercury is well placed it will yield good results financially, but it can create problems elsewhere. Mercury and Saturn are the marakaplanets for Leo rising.

However, you may find it difficult to live up to your own high standards -Virgo seeks perfection. Jupiter, Mars and the Moon are the negative planets for you: Mars rules the third and eighth houses, both malefic; the Moon rules the eleventh house and the eleventh house ruler is always negative. In addition, Jupiter is a benefic planet made malefic by ruling the cardinal seventh house (it also rules the fourth).The Sun rules the negative twelfth house.Venus rules the auspicious ninth house, making it the best planet for lagnas in Virgo. Saturn is Mercury's friend but in a chart with Virgo rising it rules the diffcult sixth house as well as the benefic fifth and so is unable to give completely positive results.So like Gemini, the other Mercury-ruled sign, Virgo does not really have a planet which acts completely positively. This situation indicates that on a spiritual level, lagnas in Virgo have some major issues to work out during this life.

Venus rules the second house for Virgo rising however its maraka qualities are lessened as it also rules the benefic ninth house.Jupiter too is amaraka planet for lagnas in Virgo.
