　　正是由於他對數學研究的執著，他卻在個人事業的巔峰時期，讓他的精神接近崩潰的邊緣。大學時代的他性格內向，一個人住一間宿舍，但是他卻在自己的腦海中幻想出一個室友出來，他不但在自己的幻覺中和這位室友一直相處很好，而且這個幻覺一直伴隨到他老，都無法抹去這個幻覺。

　　或許一般人如果患了這種病，早就瘋掉了，但是天才就是天才，他用堅強的意志支撐著自己。當他發現吃藥會讓他無法思考問題的時候，他停下了吃藥，但是不吃藥自己的腦海中又會出現很多的幻覺，幻想出很多人一直在他的周圍，不斷要求他繼續自己的研究。而且在很長的一段時間中，他認為他所幻想出來的人是存的。這樣他一直生活在痛苦中，一直也無法擺脫這種痛苦的折磨。

　　雖然痛苦一直折磨他，但是他卻勇敢走進人群中。他極喜歡大學的校園，他會漫步校園，他會默默在圖書館中，或者是給一群學生講課。

　　他並沒有放棄什麼，堅持自己的研究。他的身旁還有一個一直默默為他承擔痛苦的妻子，在她最痛苦的時候並沒有離開他，而是和她一起戰勝病魔，可以說沒有艾麗西亞，就沒有納什的偉大。他在最後獲得諾貝爾獎的時候的一段演講也是感人至極，沒有什麼豪言壯語，有的只是發自內心的一段讓人的心靈得到慰藉的樸實的話。
