A Wrinkle in Time Part 4 The Black Thing
昨天我們學習了drift 和condense這兩個單詞，我們可以來複習下：
drift 基本意思：漂流，漂移，引申下可以翻譯成漫無目的，搖擺不定，再引申下去是聽任某種壞情況繼續發展
Condense 基本意思：凝結，壓縮，引申的意思：文章或說話內容壓縮，液體類壓縮，如濃湯等等。
那麼我們來看看今天的內容：
第一句：Abruptly they burst out of the clouds into a shaft of light. Below them there were still rocks, above them the rocks continued to reach up into the sky, but now, thought it seemed miles upward, Meg could see where the mountain at last came to an end.
翻譯：突然他們穿出雲層進入一道亮光。在他們下面仍然有巖石，在他們上面，巖石繼續往天際延伸，但是現在，儘管看起來還有幾英裡，但是Meg終於能夠看到這座山的盡頭了。
新的詞彙：shaft n. 拍杆，軸，箭杆，杆狀物；vt.利用，在……上裝杆
作為名詞的英文解釋：
英1：a passage which goes down through a building or down into the ground, so that someone or something can get in or out 豎井
英2: a long handle on a tool, spear etc （工具的）長柄，矛杆
英3：a narrow beam of light（光的）一道，一束
英4：get the shaft 受到虧待，遇到不公正對待
作為動詞的英文解釋：
to treat someone very unfairly, especially by dishonestly getting money from them 不公正地對待（尤指騙錢）
那麼這個就是shaft的幾個意思，當然還有其他的沒有寫出來，一次性記憶太多，可能什麼都記不住。那麼總結下，豎井，長柄，一道光，受到虧待等。
第二句：Mrs. Whatsit continued to climb, her wings straining a little. Meg felt her heart racing, cold sweat began to gather on her face and her lips felt as though they were turning blue. She began to gasp.
翻譯：Mrs.Whats繼續往上飛，她的翅膀收緊了點。Meg感覺到她的心臟跳得很快，臉上開始出冷汗，她感覺到她的臀部好像都開始變藍。她開始喘氣。

1. Strain n. 張力，拉緊，負擔，扭傷，血緣；vi.拉緊，盡力；vt.拉緊，濫用，濾去，竭力
作為名詞的英譯：
英1：worry that is caused by having to deal with a problem or work too hard over a long period of time焦慮，緊張
例：Did you find the job a strain? 你覺得這份工作緊張嗎？
put/place a strain on sb.
under a strain
crack/collapse/buckle etc under the strain 因壓力大而崩潰
英2：a difficulty or problem that is caused when a person, relationship, organization, or system has too much to do or too many problems to deal with問題，困難，負擔，緊張
put/place a strain on sth: The flue epidemic has put a huge strain on the health service.流感爆發給衛生部門帶來巨大的壓力。
under a strain: His marriage was under strain.他的婚姻關係很緊張。
break/crack/collapse etc under the strain: The party split under the strain. 在重壓之下，這個政黨分裂了。
英3：a situation in which something is being pulled or pushed, or is holding weight, and so might break or become damaged 拉力，張力，推力
put/place a strain on sth: Some of these exercises put too much strain on the back muscles.這些健身動作中有些令背部肌肉負擔過重。
break/snap/collapse etc under the strain: The rope snapped under the strain. 繩子被拉斷了。
英4：an injury to a muscle or part of your body that is caused by using it too much(肌肉或人體部位的）拉傷，扭傷，勞損
例：Long hours working at a computer can cause eye strain.長時間用電腦工作會引起眼睛疲勞。
總結下：strain有worry, difficulty or problem, a situation, an injury的意思，put place a strain on sb./sth 有不同的意思，長時間用電腦工作引起眼睛疲勞裡的眼睛疲勞，該怎麼表達呢，上面都已經有涉及到了。 看看strain還有什麼其他意思：
英5：a particular quality which people have, especially one that is passed from parents to children （尤指遺傳的）性格傾向，氣質，性情
例：There』s a strain of madness in his family. 他的家族有瘋癲的傾向。
英6：an amount of a feeling that you can see in the way someone speaks, writes, paints etc. 表達方式；口吻，語氣，筆調
例: a strain of bitterness in Young』s later work 楊後期作品中怨憤的筆調
英7：strains of sth: the sound of music being played 音樂的曲調
例：We sipped wine to the strains of Beethoven.我們一邊聽貝多芬的旋律一邊抿著葡萄酒。

我們來看下作為動詞的英譯：
英1：to injure a muscle or part of your body by using it too much or making it work too hard 拉傷，扭傷，損傷
英2：to try very hard to do something using all your strength or ability 使勁，竭力，用盡全力
strain to do sth: She was straining to keep her head above the water. 她竭盡全力將頭露出水面。
strain your ears/eyes= try very hard to hear or see努力地聽/看
例：I strained my ears, listening for any sound in the silence of the cave. 我側耳傾聽寂靜的山洞裡有什麼聲音。
英3：strain every nerve: to try as hard as possible to do something 全力以赴
英4：be straining at the leash: to be eager t be allowed to do something 急欲獲準做某事，躍躍欲試
英5：not strain yourself : to not work too hard or do too much physical activity-often used in an ironic way 使自己不要過度勞累（常用於諷刺）
例：Don』t strain yourself. 別把自己累壞了。
