英國詩歌致羞怯的人（哈佛女孩讀詩）

紀伯倫在《沙與沫》中曾說：「詩不是一種表白出來的意見。它是從一個傷口或是一個笑口湧出的一首歌曲」。千百年來，人類對詩歌的喜愛從未減少，即便我們曾經感慨「詩歌已死」。2016年的諾貝爾文學獎授予了音樂詩人Bob Dylan，這讓全世界驚呼詩歌「回來啦」。其實，它從未走遠，只是你有沒有用心去感受和喜愛過。

從本周起，我們將每周一次推出這個「哈佛女孩（雪梨）讀詩」的新欄目，選擇那些能觸發你靈感和美感的英文詩歌，由曾經就讀於復旦大學和哈佛大學的中國女孩程雪梨朗誦和製作。詩歌之美不僅在於其文字，也在於誦讀出來的音律感。我們做這個欄目，不但可以讓你更多了解詩歌這種文學形式，感受讀詩的美好，讀詩還是一個糾正英語發音，增強語感的很好辦法。跟著雪梨讀，你也能做到。

今天程雪梨為我們朗誦和製作的是由T.S Eliot 1922年出版的著名長篇詩歌The Waste Land 中的第一部分「The Burial of the Dead」。

The Burial of the Dead

April is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.

Winter kept us warm, covering

Earth in forgetful snow, feeding

A little life with dried tubers.

Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee

With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,

And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,

And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.

看進光的中心，那一片沉寂。

荒涼而空虛是那大海。

索索斯垂絲夫人，著名的相命家，

患了重感冒，但仍然是

歐洲公認的最有智慧的女人，

她有一副鬼精靈的紙牌。這裡，她說，

你的牌，淹死的腓尼基水手，

這是美女貝拉磨娜，巖石的女人，

有多種遭遇的女人。

這是有三根杖的人，這是輪盤，

這是獨眼商人，還有這張牌

詩歌解析

這是艾略特的長詩《荒原》的第一部分。詩歌寫於1922年，一戰結束後四年。詩中德語是詩人自己念的！Madame Sosostris的配音應該是Lia Williams，她念得好棒。

雖然一直覺得現代主義的詩歌無法解讀，但還是可以給大家介紹一下詩歌中的主要引用：

1. What are the roots that clutch 至 under the shadow of this red rock，典出《聖經》；

2. Frisch weht der Wind的四句德語和Oed' und leer das Meer一句，典出華格納歌劇《特裡斯坦與伊索爾德》，一部愛情悲劇；

3. "Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!"摘自莎士比亞《暴風雨》，講的是，呃，一個人在海底躺啊躺啊躺久了，眼眶裡就長出了珍珠……

4. Unreal city可能指法國詩人波德萊爾《惡之花》，這一段也影射但丁《煉獄》中的……對，煉獄。

這裡摘錄一位朋友對這首詩的解讀：

（這首詩）其實講的就是艾略特覺得現代世界的人都是行屍走肉。詩裡有很多獨立的聲音，他們之間很難溝通。Modernity（現代性）消滅了很多美好的東西。後戰爭時代和傳染病使得屍體到處都是。

Death by water算是一個意象，很多人都淹死在水裡。水既代表著suffocation（窒息），也代表著新生。同時，這裡有一個fisher king的傳說，傳說的結尾提出了一個宗教途徑（religious solution），以此走出精神世界的荒蕪。
