用詞錯誤（word choice errors）是非英語母語人士在科技寫作中常犯的錯誤。每個學科都有自己的慣例，每個學科的研究人員也更容易犯某一類型的錯誤。我們的編輯列出了物理科學研究論文中常見的錯誤。相關知識點也適用於其他相關學科。

在母語人士中，這類錯誤的表現形式一般是口誤。而在非母語人士中，這種錯誤則是由於混淆單詞造成的。很多時候，發音相似的單詞含義也相似，從而更容易導致混用。

例 1：Attained 和 obtained

在高溫下，傳感器不斷獲取狀態數據。

（×）The sensors attained steady state readings at high temperatures.

（√）The sensors obtained steady state readings at high temperatures.

Attain 指取得、達到，一般用於狀態或階段，如：the larva attains maturity（幼體達到成熟階段）；而 obtain 則指獲得、獲取，如：he obtained data from hospital records（他從病歷中獲得了數據）。

例 2：主要的（principal）和原理（principle）

利用熱化學狀態下的主要成分得出遷移方程。

（×）The principle components of the thermochemical state were used to derive the transport equations.

（√）The principal components of the thermochemical state were used to derive the transport equations.

Principle 是名詞，指規則或規律，如：principle of conservation of mass（質量守恆定律）；而 principal 是形容詞，指主要的、重要的，如：principal findings of the study（研究的主要發現）。這兩個單詞因為發音相似常被誤用。

有時候，文化因素也會導致拼寫錯誤。例如，我們的編輯發現，日本作者經常混用字母 l 和 r，這主要是由日語和英語發音不同造成的。

拼寫檢查工具能夠檢查出大部分拼寫錯誤。但有時候，出錯的單詞可能是另一個拼寫正確但含義不同的單詞，這時拼寫檢查工具就無法檢查出這類錯誤。例如，作者可能會混用 correct 和 collect、arrow 和 allow、rock 和 lock。

（×）The poles were displaced in the direction of the applied pressure.

（√）The pores were displaced in the direction of the applied pressure. 去掉作用壓力方向的氣孔（pores）。

有些單詞發音雖然不同，但含義相似或存在重疊，也可能導致誤用。

例1：構思（devised）和設計（developed）

（×）We have devised a method to calculate the exergy efficiency. 我們構思（devised）了計算有效能效率的方法。

（√）We have developed a new method to calculate the exergy efficiency.我們設計（developed）了計算有效能效率的方法。

devise 和 develop 都有提出新事物的含義，但 devise 一般用於想法或計劃，而develop 則多用於產品或系統。

例2：交替的（alternate）與另外的（alternative）

（×）Alternate measures were developed to reliably calculate the losses. 設計了交替（alternate）措施，用於準確計算損耗。

（√）Alternative measures were developed to reliably calculate the losses. 設計了另外的（alternative）措施，用於準確計算損耗。

alternate 和 alternative 都有替換的意思，但 alternate 還有處於不斷變化狀態的含義，如：alternating current（交流電）。
