Historical vs. Historic

即使英語是母語的人也有時會把「Historical」和「Historic」混淆在一起，因為許多人認為他們的意思是一樣的。然而這兩個單詞的用法確實是不同的。說到學術寫作，嚴謹，精準就是一切。所以一定要確保在學術寫作中正確地使用「Historical」和「Historic」兩個術語！

Historical (Related to History)

「Historical」是指「與歷史有關」的通常術語，因此可以在提及歷史或過去事件時使用：

Historical records show that Chicago’s population grew quickly between 1850 and 1900.

歷史記錄表明，芝加哥的人口在1850至1900年間迅速增長。

它也可以用來指那些基於過去的某事，如：

Works of historical fiction are based in the past, but they don’t report true events.

它也可以用於修飾發生在距今更近的時間內的某事某物，甚至當下的某些事，只要值得與過去的相對比的，都可以用「Historic」來修飾

The Chicago Cubs』 historic 2016 World Series victory will be remembered by fans forever.

芝加哥小熊隊在2016年世界系列賽歷史性的勝利將永遠被球迷們所銘記。

要記住的關鍵是，「Historic」是指歷史中某些突出的東西。

Historical or Historic?

雖然這兩個單詞有時可以互換使用，但為了論文的嚴謹，在學術寫作中正確使用它們是至關重要的。

但是有些時候還是比較難做到，因為有些東西既可以是「historical」」，也可以是「historic」，例如，

The Declaration of Independence is a 「historical」 artifact. But it’s also a 「historic」 document。

獨立宣言是具有「歷史」的文件（是歷史上的一個文件）。但它也是一份具有「歷史性的」文件（即具有重要歷史意義的文件）。

這裡有一個小tips幫助大家記憶。

「historic」和「specific」都以「IC」結尾，「historic」比「historical」更特別：

Historical = Related to or from the past

Historic = Of historical importance
