In France, chefs(廚師,主廚) are so revered(受人尊敬的)that some have been presented with(授予某人什麼) the Légion d』Honneur(法國的榮譽勳章), the country’s highest honour(國家的最高榮譽). But with reverence comes great pressure(但是伴隨著榮譽而來的是巨大的壓力) Bernard Loiseau, a three-starred chef(三星主廚呢), once told a friend 「If I lose a star, I』ll kill myself.」 In 2003, after a newspaper speculated(猜測) he was about to be downgraded(被降級), he carried out his threat(不得不兌現諾言了).

Little wonder (難怪)some now eschew(避開) the award(難怪有些人想避開這個評這個獎).

Intolerable pressure(無法容忍的壓力)—worsened by(被什麼加劇) an arcane(晦澀難懂的), anonymou(你名單)s judging system(評價系統)—is not chefs』 only problem. Customers at Michelin-starred establishments often expect formality. But restaurants increasingly favour(越來越贊同,喜歡) a more relaxed approach to fine dining(精緻餐飲). For them, a star can be more poisoned chalice(毒酒,貌似誘人但是沒啥用的東西) than gravy train(美差). --就是說給個星也不是什麼沒差。
最後這句話簡直了,翻著個兒的表達意思,不正面講。插嘴說一句,這也是雅思作文高分表達可以學習的。
