記錄自己看《哈利波特》英文版過程中覺得比較有難度、有意思的單詞和句子。

今天是《Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone》CHAPTER THREE The Letter from No One

Page 33-36.

Because of what happened in the zoo,Harry was punished to stay in the cupboard for a very long time.After the summer holiday,Harry was going to a secondary school,his aunt Petunia prepared him a school uniform by dyeing some of Dudley’s old clothes.And for the first time,Harry received a letter from Hogwarts.

WORDS:

1.Amigo:西班牙語朋友的意思。動物園的巴西蟒蛇要走的時候對Harry說的amigo。

2.Crutch:有拐杖；支柱；依靠；胯部的意思

3.Secondary school:中學。

4.Parade：遊行；列隊行進，接受檢閱；招搖過市，大搖大擺。文章中Dudley paraded around the living-room for the family in his brand-new uniform.這裡的parade應該是大搖大擺的走路的意思，Dudley在炫耀他的新校服。

5.Gruff：粗暴的；粗啞的；脾氣壞的。中文描寫Uncle Vernon粗聲粗氣的說He said gruffly。

6.Tub:盆，桶.Aunt Petunia用一個tub給Harry的校服染色，而且染色的時候有Horrible smell，and the tub was full of what looked like dirty rags swimming in grey water.這套校服應該是很舊了，像破布一樣漂在水中。

7.Rags:破布；抹布。

8.Dye：給……染色。This material does not dye well.這塊布料沒有染好。

9.Flop:做動詞時表示撲通坐下，猛然倒下；落下；名詞時表示撲通聲，重墜聲。文中是說郵遞員送信時，信件落到地上的聲音。They heard the click of the letter-box and flop of letters on the doormat.

10.Dodge:閃開，躲開.He dodged the stick.他躲開了木棍。

11.Twang：撥弦聲。Harry’s heart twanging like a giant elastic band.這是描寫Harry看到寫給自己的信時的心情，感覺就是心在怦怦直跳。

12.Knobbly：有節的，多疙瘩的。Knobbly stick。

Sentences：

1. The escape of the Brazilian boa constrictor earned Harry his longest-ever punishment.句子裡面比較有意思的是earn這個詞，為哈利賺到了最長的禁閉。

2. He could see a tiny ray of hope.他看到了一線希望。

3. It was the proudest moment of his life.生命中最驕傲的時刻。查了一下高光時刻，可以表述為highlights，有道例句是I had all my highlights at Liverpool.

4. He thought two of his ribs might already have cracked from trying not to laugh.哈利的姑姑和姑父在表揚他們的孩子，說他是最優秀的孩子，哈利聽到後忍著不笑，以至於忍得太狠感覺肋骨都快斷了。

5. Harry seriously doubted this,but thought it best not to argue.

6. No one,ever,in his whole life,had written to him.
