however 常用於表示轉折或對比，譯為「然而」、「可是」，「不過」，「仍然」等時，有的詞書認為它是連詞，有的詞書認為它是副詞。之所以將其視為副詞，也許是因為像許多副詞一樣不僅能位於句首，而且能位於句中，甚至句末，相當於 nevertheless 或 despite this.

一、however 可以置於句首，以逗號隔開，譯為「然而、可是、仍然」等，例如：

He was feeling very ill. However, he went to school.
